Undergraduate Schools and Majors

In 1819, near the end of his long and distinguished life, Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia “to shed light on the public mind.” Knowing that democracy depends on an educated citizenry, Jefferson saw the University as a way of securing the future of the country he had helped create. Now recognized as one of the best public universities in the country, UVa remains faithful to its founder’s ideals. In a setting of extraordinary beauty—a campus known simply as the Grounds—students still gather to think critically, dream boldly, and commit themselves to the common good.
